Pajama Tops
The Copperstate Dinner Theater At Phoenix Greyhound Park is pleased to announce that we are celebrating our 25th anniversary with the hilarious farce that started it all in 1981 - Pajama Tops.
Remember 1981? In 1981, a royal wedding took place at Buckingham Palace in London, England. Prince Charles married a kindergarten teacher named Diana Spencer. July 7, 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’ Connor as the first woman for the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1981, Erno Rubik invented the Rubik‘s cube. March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot in the chest as he was walking to his limousine. May 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot. He was riding in a car around Rome. And, of course, Copperstate Dinner Theater opens!
Pajama Tops is directed by Peter J. Hill who with Arizona Republic calls ‘The Valley’s master farceur.‘, and stars Marty Berger, Susie Dwyer, Beau Heckman, Stephanie Ann Landers, Pat Russel, Ashley Shoemaker and Brian E Sweis.
Pajama Tops was first production that opened The Copperstate Dinner Theater in 1981. It was revived in 1991 for the theater’s tenth anniversary and was presented again in 2001 for the 20th season. Now it returns again to celebrate our Silver Anniversary. In recognition of this unique anniversary - Copperstate is the longest running dinner theater in valley history - we are rolling back the clocks to 1981! It’s our time-traveler’s weekend! Copperstate is already the valley greatest entertainment value at only $32.95 for dinner and the show, but for 1 weekend only - opening weekend of April 13, 14 & 15 - we will be charging 1981 prices! That’s right, for one weekend only dinner and the show will be only $16.95! Only 80 Time-traveler’s weekend tickets per night are available at this price and will be sold on a first call- first served basis. As in 1981 this price includes dinner, the show and tax, but not gratuity. A gratuity of $3.00 per person will be added to each order. Tickets for the Time-traveler’s weekend will go on sale Monday, March 26th.
In celebration of our 25th anniversary, Copperstate is delighted to bring you the hilarious farce that started it all in 1981. When wives, husbands, lovers, a particularly ditzy maid and a suspiciously active pair of pajamas are brought together in the south of France everything breaks loose! Don’t miss this hysterical farce of mistaken identities, close calls and missing PJs!! A husband is planning a business trip for philandering purposes but his wife secretly invites the same voluptuous girl to spend the weekend. The husband is trapped. Out of the blue and old friend appears followed by a gendarme who delights in cherchez-les-femmes. There is also a devilish looking butler, a maid practicing to be a cocotte, and some wildly artful dodging that have kept audiences in stitches.
The 2006-07 season marks the 25th anniversary of The Copperstate Dinner Theater, the valley oldest and most honored dinner theater. Copperstate began life in 1981 when Max Byer, owner of Max’s Sports Bar and Grill in Glendale decided to turn his empty banquet room into a full-time dinner theater. He contacted producer Candace Lincoln who created The Sunshine Players. This talented troupe presented shows in the new theater for several years until Trudy Hurley, a veteran valley performer and director took over in the mid 1980’s. The theater flourished into the 90’s when Jacque Gaston became the producing Director until illness forced her to step down. Candace Lincoln return for a brief interval until well-known valley director Peter J. Hill assumed the reigns in 1994. Hill has run the company ever since. During his tenure, Copperstate has earned more AriZoni Awards for theatrical excellence that all other valley dinner theaters combined. In 2002, Phoenix Greyhound park purchased Max’s Sports Bar and chose to turn the dinner theater space into a state-of the-art off-track betting facility. But, Dan Luciano, the General Manager of Phoenix Greyhound Park, recognized the unique value of this venerable dinner theater and built a wonderfully intimate 100 seat theater on the first floor of the Greyhound Park at 3801 E. Washington. Today, The Copperstate Dinner Theater continues to present some of the valley finest musicals, musical revues and comedies in their new theater.
Several of the valley’s finest performers and directors have worked at Copperstate over the years including Bob Sorenson, John Gentry, Ron Hunting, Robyn Allen, Cathy Dresbach, Ross Collins, Rusty Ferracane, Robyn Ferracane, Noel Irick and many others. More than 200 productions have been presented on our stages including the valley premiers of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Marriage is Murder, Same Time, Another Year, Caught in the Net, Funny Money, and the upcoming, Plaid Tidings - The Forever Plaid Christmas Show. Copperstate has also presented the world premier productions of The Big Radio Broadcast of 1941, Broadway Jukebox, 4 on the Floor, Somewhere in the Night - The Barry Manilow Songbook, and the upcoming, No Regrets- Edith Piaf. Pajama Tops marks the 70th Copperstate show produced by Peter J. Hill.
